Benedict Erick Mutis Copyright (c) 2025 Benedict Erick Mutis https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0 2025-04-09 2025-04-09 4 1 1 14 10.59029/int.v4i1.36 Symbolic Meaning of Pope Francis' Apostolic Journey in Indonesia and Its Public Reception: Strengthening Interfaith Fraternity https://www.journal.integritasterbuka.id/index.php/integritas/article/view/57
This study analyzes the symbolic meaning of Pope Francis' apostolic journey to Indonesia in September 2024, using George Herbert Mead's Symbolic Interaction Theory. The research focuses on how the symbolic actions, words, and objects during the visit were interpreted by Indonesian society, particularly in the context of interfaith relations. The study employs a qualitative approach, utilizing literature study techniques to analyze primary sources such as official documents, speeches, and media reports, as well as secondary sources like academic journals and books. The findings reveal that Pope Francis' visit carried profound symbolic meanings, particularly through his gestures (e.g., kissing the hand of the Grand Imam of Istiqlal Mosque), speeches, and the signing of the Istiqlal Declaration on Religious Harmony. These actions were widely perceived as promoting interfaith dialogue and solidarity, although some skepticism existed among certain groups. This research contributes to the understanding of how symbolic interactions can foster interfaith harmony in a multicultural society like Indonesia, offering insights for future studies on religious diplomacy and public reception of symbolic actions.
Dede Setiawan Adila Kamilia Copyright (c) 2025 Dede Setiawan, Adila Kamilia https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0 2025-04-09 2025-04-09 4 1 15 28 10.59029/int.v4i1.57 The Social Meaning and Cultural Transformation in the Sisingaan Tradition: A Study of the Panganten Sunat Tradition in Cibiru, West Java https://www.journal.integritasterbuka.id/index.php/integritas/article/view/44
This study aims to examine the meaning and role of the Sisingaan tradition in circumcision ceremonies in Cibiru District, Bandung City, West Java, and to understand how this tradition functions as a symbol of social solidarity and cultural identity. The research method used is a qualitative approach, with data collection through interviews with cultural leaders and participants of the tradition, as well as direct observation of the Sisingaan procession. The findings reveal that Sisingaan carries profound symbolic meaning, serving as a symbol of social transition and resistance against oppression. Furthermore, this tradition plays a significant role in strengthening social bonds and preserving cultural identity amid modernization. This study contributes to enriching the understanding of the role of rituals in Sundanese society and applies Victor Turner's ritual theory to interpret the dimensions of liminality and communitas in Sisingaan. The findings also provide insights into how this tradition can adapt to a modern context without losing its cultural significance.
Diran Murtadho Yeni Huriani Ahmad Gibson Albustomi Copyright (c) 2025 Diran Murtadho, Yeni Huriani, Ahmad Gibson Albustomi https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0 2025-04-09 2025-04-09 4 1 29 38 10.59029/int.v4i1.44 Fighting Stigma, Advocating for Peace: Ainun Jamilah's Effort in Changing Society's View of Veiled Women Through the Digital Peace Movement https://www.journal.integritasterbuka.id/index.php/integritas/article/view/58
This study aims to explore the role of Ainun Jamilah and the Cadar Garis Lucu community in combating the negative stigma against veiled women in Indonesia, as well as to analyze the impact of the peace movement promoted through social media. The research adopts a mixed-methods approach (quantitative-qualitative) through the collection of survey data, in-depth interviews, and online observation, particularly focusing on the Cadar Garis Lucu Instagram account (@cadargarislucu). The study found a contradiction in public perceptions; where although many still view veiled women with a negative stigma, they also support the peace efforts carried out by veiled women via digital platforms. Through the Cadar Garis Lucu movement, Ainun Jamilah plays a key role in redefining the image of veiled women by promoting the values of religious moderation and peace. Through various educational content and interfaith dialogues, she facilitates, Ainun has successfully introduced a new face of veiled women as open, inclusive, and tolerant despite still facing negative stigma related to their appearance. This research contributes to the understanding of how social media can be used to advocate for peace and reduce stigma against marginalized groups. The contribution of this study lies in the application of religious moderation theory in the digital context and the use of social media to promote inclusivity and intergroup dialogue.
Nayla Putri Alamsyah Copyright (c) 2025 Nayla Putri Alamsyah https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0 2025-04-09 2025-04-09 4 1 39 60 10.59029/int.v4i1.58 Liberation Theology and Social Empowerment: A Case Study of Nahdlatul Ulama in Subang, West Java https://www.journal.integritasterbuka.id/index.php/integritas/article/view/50
This study aims to explore the implementation of liberation theology within Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), focusing on how religious values are integrated with social actions to address issues such as poverty, injustice, and structural oppression in the local context. For empirical evidence, the author focuses on the application of theology within Nahdlatul Ulama Subang, West Java. This study employs a qualitative approach, with data collection techniques including in-depth interviews, observations, and document analysis. The findings indicate that NU, particularly in Subang, adopts a substantialistic and rationalistic approach to liberation theology, focusing on empowering marginalized communities through critical awareness education, zakat- and infaq-based economic programs, and social advocacy. This approach has strengthened NU's role as an agent of social transformation at the local level, despite challenges such as structural resistance and internal organizational dynamics. This research contributes to the understanding of liberation theology as both an ideological and practical framework that aligns religious values with contemporary social justice efforts, while demonstrating the flexibility of religion to adapt to the needs of the times while preserving its spiritual essence.
Muhammad Iqbal Firmansyah Copyright (c) 2025 Muhammad Iqbal Firmansyah https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0 2025-04-09 2025-04-09 4 1 61 70 10.59029/int.v4i1.50 The Paradigm of Interfaith Relations Thought in the Post-Reform Era as a Conflict Resolution Strategy in Indonesia https://www.journal.integritasterbuka.id/index.php/integritas/article/view/59
Indonesia, as a country with high religious diversity, faces challenges in maintaining interfaith harmony, particularly in the post-Reform era of 1998, which expanded religious freedom while also increasing the risk of religion-based conflicts. This study aims to analyze the paradigm of interfaith relations in the post-Reform period and its contribution to resolving religious conflicts. Using a qualitative approach based on literature studies, this research examines various theories and perspectives of interfaith figures. The key findings indicate four phases in the dynamics of interfaith relations in Indonesia: the interfaith dialogue phase, which led to the emergence of interreligious communities; the advocacy phase, which focused on defending religious freedom rights; the creative campaign phase, which disseminated messages of tolerance through innovative media; and the intersectional phase, which integrates multiple approaches to develop inclusive policies. The academic contribution of this research lies in integrating various paradigms of thought, including neo-modernism, democratic socialism, universalism, liberative modernism, universal humanism, and non-violent conflict resolution, which can be implemented in religious diversity policies in Indonesia. However, this study has limitations in empirical research, and further studies are recommended to assess the effectiveness of these approaches through direct case studies and more specific policy analyses.
Muhammad Daffa Copyright (c) 2025 Muhammad https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0 2025-04-09 2025-04-09 4 1 71 86 10.59029/int.v4i1.59 The Polemics of Interfaith Marriage and Patterns of Negotiation in Indonesian Films https://www.journal.integritasterbuka.id/index.php/integritas/article/view/60
Indonesian cinema has often portrayed the theme of marriage between different religions occasionally. These problems frequently occur in society and trigger a complicated negotiation process between the individuals concerned. The difficulty of negotiation is because religion and marriage have significant consequences for the stability of family and community networks, so decision-making is based on many considerations. The prohibition of marriages of different religions raises questions regarding the compelling ways for couples of various faiths to deal with the inner and physical conflicts caused by these events. This research examines the negotiation patterns of different religious couples in Indonesian films (Ayat-Ayat Cinta 1, Tanda Tanya, and Akhirat: A Love Story). Roland Barthes' semiotic theory and Gordon Allport's theory of religion are used in this study to examine the issue. The research can show how the three films offer a process of contemplation that ultimately leads the characters to make wise decisions and maintain broader harmonization.
Marta Widyawati Anindita Fikri Amalia Muhammad Hamdan Mukafi Copyright (c) 2025 Marta Widyawati, Anindita Fikri Amalia, Muhammad Hamdan Mukafi https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0 2025-04-09 2025-04-09 4 1 87 100 10.59029/int.v4i1.60
